Das vogelfestival ruhr findet am gleichen Platz wie schon 2008 statt: Am Nordufer des Kemnader See im Ruhrtal südlich von Bochum. Der Kemnader See wurde in den siebziger Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts durch einen Aufstau der Ruhr zu Naherholungszwecken geschaffen und 1980 eingeweiht. Heute ist der See nicht nur ein attraktives Naherholungsziel, sondern auch ein wichtiger Lebensraum für zahlreiche Wasservögel. Interessante Naturbeobachtungen direkt vom Platz des vogelfestival aus sind deshalb auch hier garantiert. Der Veranstaltungsplatz befindet am Nordufer des Sees im Bereich des Freizeitzentrums Kemnader See. Bei gutem Wetter ist es am Wochenende Ziel tausender von Freizeitsportlern und Naturinteressierten, wie auch der Erfolg des vogelfestivals in 2008 und 2009 an dieser Stelle eindrucksvoll dokumentierte. In einer Fahrentfernung (überwiegend Autobahn) von maximal 50 Kilometer die großen Städte des Ruhrgebietes Bochum (375000 Einwohner), Dortmund (585000 Einwohner), Essen (580000 Einwohner), Duisburg (500000 Einwohner), Oberhausen (218000 Einwohner), Mühlheim (170000 Einwohner), Gelsenkirchen (265000 Einwohner). Selbst die Landehauptstadt von Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf (575000 Einwohner), ist nur wenig weiter entfernt (60 km). Lake Kemnade was created for recreational purposes in the 1970s by damming the Ruhr and was inaugurated in 1980. Today the lake is not only an attractive, local recreation destination, but also an important habitat for numerous waterfowl. Interesting nature observations are also practically guaranteed directly from this vogelfestival location. The location is on the north shore of the lake in the area of the lake’s recreation centre. In nice weather, thousands of recreational athletes and nature lovers flock here, as demonstrated by the striking success of the 2008 and 2009 vogelfestival at this location. Within a driving distance (primarily on the Autobahn) of under 50 km are the major cities of the Ruhr region: Bochum (375,000 residents), Dortmund (585,000 residents), Essen (580,000 residents), Duisburg (500,000 residents), Oberhausen (218,000 residents), Mühlheim (170,000 residents), and Gelsenkirchen (265,000 residents).
