In anderen westlichen Ländern haben sich die Natur- und insbesondere die Vogelbeobachtung (birdwatching oder amerikanisch birding) als Massenbewegung bereits etabliert. Die höchsten Zahlen sind aus Großbritannien und den USA bekannt. Auch in Deutschland nimmt die Zahl der Menschen, die Freude daran haben, wildlebende Vögel und die Natur allgemein zu beobachten, stetig zu. Indizien dafür sind: eine ansteigende Wahrnehmung in den Medien, gefüllte Regale in den Buchhandlungen, spezielle Reiseangebote, Internetplattformen, Beobachtungsstürme in den Naturschutzgebieten etc. Am letzten August-Wochenende 2008 hatte dann das erste vogelfestival seine Premiere am Kemnader See im Ruhrtal bei Bochum. Mehr als 5000 Besucher erlebten eine gelungene Veranstaltung, die mit einem breiten Informations- und Veranstaltungsangebot die Besucher drei Tage lang bestens unterhielt.
